There are about a million-and-a-half beatsheet formats out there, some more complex than others.

At Young Screenwriters, we've stripped the beatsheet it down to its barebones—just the core tent poles you need to keep your story alive.

To use this template, delete the explanations of each beat and then write in your answers. And you're done!

If you want to see a beatsheet in action, check out this example for Star Wars made by Adam—the head of our Feedback Team.

When you go from a short film script to a feature script, the biggest change is the number of obstacles. Shorts have only a handful, while features have 90 minutes worth.

As you begin “breaking your story” (or building the plot of your script), work to fill in these beats. It's harder than it looks, so don't be discouraged if it takes some time. Good luck!
