Exciting news – we have uploaded the first 2 films made during last years Young Screenwriters project – Home alone and Despair of the Slayer. Home Alone was written by a group of young people at Manning School for Girls who worked with Jamie Rhodes from Donkey Stone Films to adapt the short story Home Alone by Robbie Gibbons for screen. The 2nd film, Despair of the Slayer was written by a group of young people from Claremont Primary School, again working with Jamie, Steve Little from Broadway and Film Director Steven Sheil. They used the short story The Blood Market by Alan Gibbons as inspiration and came up with their own story.

New resource added to filmmaking section – Calling the Roll

A new resource has been added to the filmmaking resource section. It is a downloadable document of the typical procedure that happens when a scene is being shot – known as Calling the Roll. It includes the instructions for everyone to get ready for a take, start the camera, mark the scene with a a slate (or clapper board), ‘Action’ and ‘Cut’. This is the version of Calling the Roll we will be using throughout the Young Screenwriters program.

Storyboard PDF files added to resource section

2 storyboard templates have been added to the resource section – a 2×2 box version and a 2×3 box version. They are saved as PDF files which can be saved on to your computer by clicking on the picture, selecting ’save as’ from the file menu and choosing your computer as a destination for the file.

Writer/Director Steven Sheil to direct Claremont film

Writer and Director Steven Sheil who is based at Broadway Cinema will be Directing Despair of the Slayer written by the Claremont group. Steven is currently looking through the script and making initial Director’s notes which he will feed back to the group. Meanwhile the group is beginning to learn Directing and filmmaking skills so that they can be fully involved in the process of making their film with Steven as a mentor. Filming is due to take place in May and June.

Dunkirk Primary script in development

Dunkirk Primary have started work on their script – they are keeping with the horror genre but are using the book Street Child by Berlie Doherty as their inspiration. Further details will be posted as they develop!

British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) info added to resource section

A section has been added to the resources section relating to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

The BBFC is the independent regulator of the film and video industry in the UK. The BBFC decides what age certificate a film is given – the main categories are U, PG, 12, 12A, 15 and 18.

When writing a film script and making a film it is useful to read the guidelines to see what is suitable for different ages. You may need to alter your script to make it more accessible to a younger audience.

There are PDF files of the full classification guidelines and also separate files for each of the main categories which you can download and print off for quick reference.

Claremont script added to showcase

A new script has been added to the showcase section. It is called Despair of the Slayer and has been produced by Doha Bassiouni, Connor McCourt Hanrahan, Mason Hollis, Ruby Jackson, Zara Kayani, Kelly Williams and Lucas Young who are all from Claremont Primary School. They have been working with Jamie Rhodes on an adaptation from Alan Gibbons’ book – they have taken characters from The Blood Market and imagined a future scenario and have also interwoven elements of plot detail from other stories from Dark Spaces.

We are now moving into the film production stage – we will keep you updated of progress!
